A little about me

As far back as I can remember, pastors and church leaders told me that I couldn’t live the faith of my parents. They told me that I had to own my faith.

That notion excited me. My Faith. It was possessive. It was mine.

As I started that discovery process, the boundaries and expected results were made very clear by certain church leaders. I could discover in any manner of which they approved. I could believe anything I wanted, as long as it was in line of their ‘orthodox’ understandings.

That formula worked for me for many years, but I came to a point that it didn’t work anymore. My journey was taking me outside of the parameters that were preset for me. Something had to change and I was only in a position to change myself. So I did.

About 10 years ago, I left the conventional church setting to see if God existed only in the expensive building and well written statements of faith that were constructed for him. Much to my surprise, I found him.

This blog is a little something about that. So here, you’ll find a bit of my journey, presented as honestly and openly as possible. I’m well aware that some of what I write here contradicts both conventional theology and even myself. I embrace those contradictions in full honesty. I believe an awareness of personal contradiction to be integral part of one’s journey. Contradiction shows one of two things. It is my hope that my personal contradictions are a sign of growth.

Acknowledge it.

Wrestle with it.

Adjust.

Move on.

You’ll also find articles written by friends, along with other things I like. Some articles are journey related. Some aren’t.

A point of clarification to articles I post from other people: I don’t always agree with everything that I post here. I don’t even always agree with many of the things I write. But I do find various perspectives on topics intriguing and, at times, I feel compelled to share.

If they cause me consider and wrestle with my faith or particular mindset, perhaps it’ll do the same for others.

I’m a son, a brother, a husband, a friend, a pastor, and a follower of Jesus. I don’t pretend to be perfect and if you hang out here long enough, I’ll probably say or post something that you don’t agree with and I’m okay with that. Hopefully you are too. That doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.
